In partnership with the UNC Asheville Center for Diversity Education, The Women’s March on Asheville & The Women’s March on Washington’s Unity Principle 4: LGBTQIA Rights, the UNCA Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program will hold a panel/audience discussion in the Laurel Forum (first floor of Karpen Hall) on March 2nd, 7 PM, UNCA.
This will take place in conjunction with the exhibit: “The Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals: 1933-1945,” on display in Ramsey Library from Feb. 12 - April 7, and Pioneering Voices: Portraits of Transgender People on display in the Karpen Lobby during the same time period.
Women's March Unity Principle 4: LGBTQIA RIGHTS
We firmly declare that LGBTQIA Rights are Human Rights and that it is our obligation to uplift, expand and protect the rights of our gay, lesbian, bi, queer, trans or gender non-conforming brothers, sisters and siblings. We must have the power to control our bodies and be free from gender norms, expectations and stereotypes.
After showing short excerpts from the documentary, Paragraph 175, we will have a panel/audience discussion. Panelists include Asheville Attorney Diane Walton, UNCA Professors Lori Horvitz & Lorena Russell, UNCA students and staff.
Guiding Questions:
1) What does the Unity Principle "LGBTQIA Rights" mean --nationally and for us in WNC? What is the connection between Paragraph 175 (focus of the Nazi Persecution exhibit) and HB2?
2) How may these rights be affected in the next 4 years under a new presidency? How could that affect our community in Asheville and in WNC? What are our residents' concerns?
3) Should LGBTQIA Rights be compromised, how could we respond as a community? How can all people of the LGBTQIA population work together and across age/gender/sexuality etc. divides?
